Stop Climate Injustice

Climate change is killing the developing world

The world stands on the cusp of disaster, but positive action could transform the future.  Every government and individual has a role to play - climate change and poverty go hand in hand and can be tackled together.

Our world is getting hotter

Five of the hottest years on record have been in the last decade. The world's leading scientists predict temperature increases of between 1.4 and 5.8 degrees by 2100. Anything over 2ºC will trigger catastrophe - millions could die and parts of the world could become uninhabitable.

Impact on the world's poor

Climate change is already affecting the lives of millions of poor people. More than a third of the world's population struggle to live on less than $2 a day. Many communities in the developing world depend on farming or fishing so that even slight changes in the weather affect their livelihoods. Poor people living in low-lying coastal areas prone to flooding have little protection when disaster strikes. Erratic weather patterns are causing increasing severe droughts in sub-Saharan Africa.

Tacking poverty & climate change together

Access to energy is vital for development - it allows communities to pump clean water and children to use light to study at night. Measures to combat climate change must not be at the expense of the economic and social growth of developing countries.  Practical Action's projects across the world show that win:win renewable energy solutions can make a real difference to people's lives - without ruining the planet.

What can be done

Around the world, Practical Action is working together with people to help them adapt to the effects of climate change Urgent action is required to help poor communities to adapt to the effects of climate change. At the same time we must reduce global emissions.

Practical Action is a member of the Stop Climate Chaos coalitionStop Climate Chaos

Along with WWF, Friends of the Earth, Oxfam, Christian Aid and others, we are proud to be a member of the 'Stop Climate Chaos' campaigning coalition. The network aims to build pressure for political action to stop climate change. It calls for the government to cut the UK's global warming gas emissions and to make tackling climate change a key part of its plans to deal with global poverty

"I am here today to tell you all that climate change is already impacting on my people. It is not just a threat, it is a reality.

"As a result of global warming, we are facing flooding that is more severe and lasts for longer each year. In 2004 for example, there were very bad floods; 38% of the country was covered in water that destroyed 80% of our crops and left 10 million people homeless."
